China unveils high-speed train capable of 450 km/h

China has recently introduced the prototype of its next-generation high-speed train, the CR450, which is capable of reaching 450 kilometres per hour. The train is expected to begin commercial service in 2025, connecting major cities like Beijing and Shanghai in just over three hours. The CR450 represents a leap forward in rail technology, surpassing its predecessor, the CR400, which operates at a speed of 350 km/h. China denies US allegations of hacking

  Iconic hacking photo: Reuters Beijing has rejected US allegations that a Chinese state-backed hacker group hacked the US Treasury's systems. According to the US, the Chinese hackers have managed to access some documents that are not secret, by hacking the ministry's workstation (workstation). US officials made this claim last Monday. This incident happened in early December. The matter came to light after the finance ministry sent a letter to lawmakers informing them about the incident. The US Treasury Department said in a letter to lawmakers that the China-based hacker group was able to hack into the department's systems using external service providers. Hackers attacked several Chrome extensions: Report

A series of cyberattacks has compromised multiple Chrome browser extensions, impacting several companies since mid-December, according to a recent report by Reuters. California-based data protection firm Cyberhaven confirmed on 27 December that its Chrome extension was breached during a malicious attack on Christmas Eve. The company noted that cybersecurity experts have linked the attack to a broader campaign targeting developers of Chrome extensions across various organisations, as per the report. The exact scope of the campaign remains unclear, but experts suggest that hackers have compromised extensions related to artificial intelligence, virtual private networks, and other sectors. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) referred inquiries to the companies involved.  Browser extensions, which are often used to enhance web browsing can become a vulnerability if compromised. EU finally mandates USB-C chargers for all devices

The European Union (EU) has officially announced the implementation of its long-awaited mandate for USB-C chargers, requiring all new portable electronic devices sold in the EU to adopt the standardised charging port.  As of 28 December 2024, the mandate applies to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, and earbuds sold in the EU. Under the EU directive 2022/2380, all gadget manufacturers have to comply with this rule. Moreover, laptops will need to comply with this rule by 28 April 2026. The Common Charger Directive, approved by the Council of the EU in October 2022, set a transition period for manufacturers to comply with the new rules. The regulation aims to simplify charging, reduce electronic waste, and save consumers money. Iran lifts ban on WhatsApp and Google Play

This was announced as the first step towards easing internet restrictions in the country. The country's state media reported this news on Tuesday. The Islamic Republic has one of the strictest restrictions on internet access in the world. The country has banned US-based social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. However, tech-savvy users usually circumvent this restriction by using a virtual private network (VPN). Iran's state news agency IRNA reported on Tuesday, "A positive majority vote has been taken to lift restrictions limiting access to some popular foreign platforms such as WhatsApp and Google Play."
